This interactive installation was on display in the Black Gallery at San Jose State University in the spring of 2019.
The purpose of the installation was to bring awareness of mental health issues and stop the stigma surrounding it. The interactive installation gave viewers the opportunity to share their own mental health struggles while seeing that there are other people in the community that are also fighting against their own struggles.
Mental illness has been stigmatized and brushed aside when brought up in conversation. The You Are Not Alone Project aims to put a stop to the stigma of mental illness and show people that they are not alone in their struggles. This project pushes for social activism and engages the audience by asking for their participation, sharing their experiences, and adding their story. Through participation and openness we show that everyone is affected by mental issues and struggles.
Who am I?
I am a Photography BFA student at San Jose State University. I am a lover, a dreamer, and eager to explore the world I was brought into. I want to get to know the people around me and understand who they are and the struggles they experience because we are all unique with a story to tell. I am a student of life and for life and I want to put my knowledge to use and become a teacher.
How am I affected?
I struggle with anxiety and depression. I push through those feelings and smile happily, hug deeply, and will be there for someone in need. I self-sacrifice to redirect my thoughts and avoid my own personal demons. There are times I feel like it would be okay if I disappeared into nothing.
